Everyone knows how fun it is to dance salsa and other latin rhythms, how we Latinos enjoy the flavour of music once it starts playing on the radio. But do you know where the word salsa comes from? And how many styles of salsa dancing are there these days?. Here below you will find a brief story of how salsa music and dance began.

The first person to introduce the word Salsa in the 1930s was Cuban composer and musician Ignacio Piñeiro who composed a famous song titled “Échale salsita,” which translates to “add a little flavor.” This catchy tune marked the first use of the word “Salsa” in the context of Latin dance music. Piñeiro infused the musical scene with a vibrant and tasty energy, similar to the condiment itself.

From then on, the term “Salsa” gained popularity and became a label for several dances of Latin American origin, such as Rumba, Cha Cha, Mambo and more. The essence of Salsa lies in its fusion of Afro-Caribbean and Latin rhythms, creating a dynamic and passionate dance form.

Salsa dance then became popular  for the first time in New York in the 1960s.
